100 years, 100 books

Goodreads picked the best book of each year from 1925 to 2024. I pulled the full list from a Jack in the Books video via auto-captions, cleaned up the mangled names, and organized it a few ways. The 1951 entry was garbled in the captions and is filled from the underlying Goodreads list.

The list changes its mind about what a book is

Literary fiction dominates the first four decades. Genre fiction (horror, fantasy, sci-fi, thriller) takes over in the 70s through 90s. The 2000s and 2010s swing to book-club literary fiction and memoir. Then romantasy crashes the party in 2023.

The whole canon is hiding in here

Seven books that trace a century of anxieties, from state control to censorship to theocracy to climate to memory to televised inequality. Read them in order and you get a history of what people were afraid of.

The value quadrant

Most unputdownable

• Rebecca (1938). The gold standard of tension.
• Gone Girl (2012). The mid-book twist is one of the great rug-pulls.
• The Secret History (1992). Tells you the killer on page one and you still race to the end.
• The Hunger Games (2008). Ruthless chapter hooks, present tense momentum.
• Into Thin Air (1997). Nonfiction you read in one sitting.

The response-book cluster

A fat cluster of books answering older books: Wide Sargasso Sea (Jane Eyre), Wicked (Oz), Circe (the Odyssey), Demon Copperhead (David Copperfield), James (Huckleberry Finn), and The Vanishing Half responding to Passing, which sits 91 years earlier on the same list. The 2020s clearly reward this mode: three of the last five picks are retellings.

Only seven nonfiction picks

Diary of a Young Girl, Roots, Into Thin Air, A Walk in the Woods, All About Love, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Crying in H Mart. Five of the seven land after 1996. Goodreads readers drifted toward memoir late in the century.
